Masters of automotive design – The man who shaped Mercedes-Benz
Born on November 12, 1933, in Udine, Italy, Sacco grew up in a military family, which perhaps instilled in him a sense of discipline and commitment. His fascination with automobiles ignited at a young age, culminating in his graduation as the youngest geometer in Italy at 17. The pivotal moment in his career came after attending the Turin Motor Show in 1951, where the world of innovative car design captivated him.
Sacco joined Carrozzeria Ghia in 1955, immersing himself in model production and gaining valuable experience that set the stage for his future. His encounter with Karl Wilfert of Mercedes-Benz in 1957 led to an invitation to join the company. Starting as a stylist, Sacco eventually ascended to Chief Designer in 1975, a role in which he significantly shaped the brand’s aesthetic and technological direction until his retirement in 1999.
Sacco’s influence at Mercedes-Benz is profound, having designed iconic models such as the E-Class of model series 124, the S-Class series 126, the Mercedes-Benz 190 (W 201), and the sensational SL of model series R 129. Marcus Breitschwerdt, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Heritage GmbH, noted, “Bruno Sacco has defined the shape of numerous icons from Mercedes-Benz,” highlighting the lasting impact of his work, which continues to capture the admiration of drivers and collectors alike.
His designs often showcased a perfect blend of aesthetic appeal and aerodynamic efficiency, attracting a diverse audience. Sacco’s commitment to elegance is epitomized in the S-Class series 126, which he regarded as his finest achievement. Beyond his design prowess, he was instrumental in establishing a new Design Center in Sindelfingen, emphasizing the importance of design in the automotive experience.
Sacco’s legacy is immortalized through numerous awards, an honorary doctorate from the University of Udine, and his induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame. He once remarked, “Mercedes has been my life, and I stand for that time one hundred percent,” reflecting a deep connection to a brand that he helped transform.
